Now You Can Shop For Tech Support!

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Support Space is hoping to do for tech support what Amazon did for buying books.

Support Space has been around for a couple of years now, but has been in beta testing for most of that. In early 2008, it’s now been opened up to everyone.

You can sign in, and then browse over 100 certified technicians. I’m unclear on how the certification is verified, but each profile lists the tech’s expertise, technical certifications, customer ratings, and fees. Some charge per session, and some by the hour. This is usually done by chat line, or sometimes by phone.

You can also type in the specific problem you’re having, and then receive a list of matching tech profiles. Every profile includes an icon which indicates whether the tech is online or not.

Check it out. This could be a very useful tool. Especially considering the increasingly poor tech support given by purchased products and services. Plus, this could be a great way for geeks like you and me to earn a few extra bucks!

Shame On You Firefox!

Firefox LogoBefore I start my rant, just let me clarify that I still feel Firefox is far superior to Internet Explorer. It’s still my browser of choice, but I really don’t appreciate not being given the choice to make Firefox my default browser upon installation.

I’ve read that some people feel this is amusing, but I found it disturbing that Firefox takes deliberate measures to hijack your browsing.

After the installation, just try clicking on your IE icon. It opens up FireFox instead of Explorer. NOT NICE, and BAD BUSINESS I say!

Just before the completion of the installation of Firefox 3.0, there’s a message that says something like “Firefox will become your default browser”. There was no choice given at that point! I saw it, but didn’t care much about that. I figured I could just go in and change it.

After searching for the box to tick or untick, I couldn’t find one. I did find a box in Tools/Options/Advanced/General, that says “Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup”. This box by default was unchecked. So obviously this check would never be performed.

BlueHost ~ Great Affordable Web Hosting!

BlueHostAs a website designer, and a blogger, I’m always dealing with different web hosting companies. I try to stay on top of who’s offering what, and what it all means to you and me.

There have been times that I’ve had to deal with different hosting companies to either, solve a problem a client is having, or to get a current site moved to another hosting company. I can’t believe how difficult some companies are to navigate through their admin panel. BlueHost uses CPanel 11. I’ve only come across a few others that use this. It’s so easy to find your way around and get things done.

Hostgator, Lunarpages, and HostMonster are the others I’ve seen. I’m sure there are some others, but I haven’t found them. By the way, HostMonster is a subsidiary of BlueHost.

GoDaddy had me pulling my hair out trying to get to their DNS pointers. The only thing I’ve found good about GoDaddy is their sexy advertisements. Just goes to show you, Sex Sells!

SKYPE ~ Call Anywhere In The World For Free ~ WOW!

Skype LogoMy daughter lives in Brighton, England. I can call her anytime from the U.S. for absolutely nothing and we can talk for as long as we want to. Ain’t the internet great?

This is all done by Skype user to user through the internet. All you need is a set of headphones and to download the software onto your computer. I might add though that it will definitely be a plus to have a high speed connection.

There’s no lag or distortion, and the quality of sound is great. Skype also offers a landline service for a very reasonable price, but we’re talking the free stuff for now!

Great Online Tech Shopping!

SearchAllDeals.comPriceWatch.comI don’t know about you, but I have a hard time paying the inflated prices at the local computer parts stores.

A few years ago I started building custom computers. If you’re going to go down to your local computer parts store to buy all the components needed to build your own custom computer, you might as well just go buy the complete package already built, because you won’t be saving much.
