If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

It has been a very unusual week in IT news, headlines were dominated by alleged crime and actual crime. What’s this world coming to? Here’s our line up of the ugly side of IT.

Details of major Internet flaw posted by accident and DNS attack code out in wild: After a computer security company inadvertently posted details online of a major flaw in the Internet DNS (Domain Name System), it was just a matter of time before the attack code made the rounds.

San Francisco DA discloses city’s network passwords and San Francisco’s mayor gets back keys to the network: Arguing in a court motion against a defense request to decrease the US$5 million bail in the case of Terry Childs, the San Francisco district attorney publicly revealed usernames and passwords of the city’s network.

Fugitive spam king dead in apparent murder-suicide: Convicted spammer Eddie Davidson, who walked away from a minimum-security prison camp Sunday, was found dead Thursday in his hometown of Bennett, Colorado, after he shot his wife, their 3-year-old daughter and himself in an apparent murder-suicide.

Microsoft’s online woes hint at larger vulnerability and Microsoft exec leaving to become Juniper CEO: Microsoft reorganized the division that oversees its Online Services Business and Windows OS, splitting Platform and Services to separate the distinct product lines.

Not a good week in news for IT. Let’s hope next week brings some cheers!

ICE (In Case of an Emergency)

ICE LogoAccording to Wikopedia, In Case of Emergency (ICE) is a program that enables first responders, such as paramedics, firefighters and police officers, to identify victims and contact their next of kin to obtain important medical information. The program was conceived by Bob Brotchie, a British paramedic, and promoted in May of 2005. It encourages people to enter emergency contacts in their cell phone address book under the name “ICE”.

According to a research performed by Vodafone, fewer than 25% of people carry any details of who they would like telephoned following a serious accident. I have to be honest, at this moment, I don’t carry any of that information either. But I can tell you that I did just put my emergency contact number under the name of ICE in my cell phone address book!

Makin’ Money On The Internet! Ain’t Life Grand?

MoneyThis post is a bit out of my niche. Well, it IS about the Internet I suppose!

I just can’t get over how many different ways there are to make money on the internet. Since I’ve started this blog, I’ve seen a number of different ways to put advertisements on your blog. Imagine how it would feel to wake up in the morning knowing that you made money while you were sleeping.

The main thing here though is to keep priorities straight. The money is the bonus to blogging. There has to be a much deeper motivation if you’re going to succeed. The most important part is the quality of the content in the posts. I personally feel that you need to be providing some quality information to the reader. Otherwise you’re cheating your readers, and quite frankly, I doubt if you’ll have any return visitors anyway, if they’re not being enlightened or entertained by what you have to say.

Mini-Site Creator, Site Builder, or is it Crap Builder?

This post is also written with the intention of promoting a Blog I came across. BrendenWilson.com.

These are all touted as easy ways to build a site or a blog, but what kind of product do you really end up with? It’s always promoted as a great way to build a great site without the need to know any html or CSS. That’s the part I have a problem with! There’s a lot more to it than that. It’s a lot of work to do it right, and a lot of practice and training! So many variables are involved. To quote Brenden’s post “built from hard work and careful analysis”.
